received a warning three days before the benghazi attack that killed an aa bagsdor, two navy seals and others. now, tonight there is another story that we know the mainstream media will not touch, and that's this. the daily caller got his hands on dozens of e-mails between the justice department officials and some of their staffers at media matters. explosive investigation reveals that the department of justice at media matters conspired together to spin stories and try to discredit news outlets, such as fox news, for accurately reporting about eric holder and his agency. joining me now is fox news contributors. so we have benghazi, we have three days warning, the obama administration did nothing. they had no beefed-up security on the anniversary of 9/11. we have a president, according to the libyan president, that's lying to the american people about all this and whether it's preplanned. $6 trillion in debt. fewer americans working. and what and the media want to talk about? when romney speaks out about our embassy being breached, our flag being burned and an al-qaeda flag being h
correspondent arwa damon in benghazi. also joining us david ignatius, the columnist for "the washington post." david, let me start with you. you have some information, fascinating and intriguing information that the attack on the consulate may have been linked to al qaeda operatives in libya as a revenge plot. what exactly are you hearing? >> wolf, i heard from a source who has good sources on the ground in the libyan underground that the talk there was that the attack on the u.s. consulate that killed our ambassador stevens on september 11 last week was conceived as by the people who did it, an act of revenge to retaliate for the drone attack that killed a key al qaeda operative and planner. i ran that yesterday by a u.s. intelligence official who said that although some of the elements that i'd heard did not check out that they had heard the same thing. they'd heard this talk of revenge for the killing as a motive for the attack on the consulate in benghazi. so the u.s. government has been hearing the same thing that i picked up from my source. >> that would seem to suggest, david, i'm goi
trouble controlling violence in benghazi before four americans were killed at the u.s. consulate. >> did the administration have any sort of heads up that violence was increasing specifically in libya before the attack? >> i'm not aware of any, ed. there is a matter under investigation. what precipitated the attack, motivation of the attackers were, what role the video played in that. >> intelligence sources have told fox catherine herridge that before the attack, the cia had assessed eastern libya with deteriorating. today carney seemed to back pedal ever so slightly from ambassador susan rice's sunday declaration that the violence in libya was spontaneous reaction to that controversy anti-muslim film. >> in fact, this was not a preplanned, premeditated attack. >> while carney did stand behind the video being a key factor, he opened the door to other possibilities being uncovered in the f.b.i. investigation. >> the cause and motivation behind them will be decided by the investigation. >> there are other factors involved in the violence that ensued? >> new questions as well about the fac
that sets us apart from other nations. this was their work in benghazi and this is the work we will carry on. >> president obama today talking of the mission that so many americans do and what four americans died doing. we put them front and center tonight. ambassador christopher stevens, sean smith, glen doherty and tyrone woods. joining me on the phone is ambassador stevens' stepfather. i am so sorry for your loss and please extend our condolences to your entire family. what do you want people to know about your stepson? >> well, i think what you learn today, it tells me what his legacy was at the anderson air force base when the caskets were brought back, 800 members of the state department were there and the president for the first time he spoke at one of these ceremonial dignified transfers and secretary clinton spoke and they all expressed the understanding that chris's commitment to libya and to the country has left a legacy that will live after him. so this is what i'd like people to know, that he was beloved by his colleagues in the state department and from the people of libya. the
, the american consulate in benghazi, libya, was also attacked tonight. that incident believed to also have been sparked by that same controversial film. as for cairo, the protests have now quieted. the american embassy there tells us that all staff are safe and accounted for. diane? >> all right. thank you. alex marquardt reporting from the middle east tonight. >>> and now back here at home, a surprising twist in the presidential race. governor romney facing criticism tonight, not from the president or the democrats, but from some prominent members of his own party, and our new abc news/"washington post" poll shows why. take a look. the president has opened a six-point lead over governor romney since the conventions. before the conventions romney had a slight lead. the election now 56 days away, "your voice, your vote," and abc's david muir reports in from las vegas tonight. >> reporter: mitt romney in nevada on the anniversary of 9/11 in front of the national guard. >> we must keep our promises and regain the trust of all those who have worn the uniform and served our country. >> reporter: his
